about the specialization

Demand for studying illustration in our country exceeds the current possibilities of universities. This field of study is also designed to fill the gap between the focus of the graduates of existing fields and the requirements of practice.

The structure of the follow-up Master's Degree Study Program is very similar to the structure of teaching in traditional art schools − about 2/3 of the credits include the main teaching subject (studio), and only the remaining third are optional courses, which are available for complementing or enhancing individual qualifications or skills of the student. The Master level of study already asumes sufficient maturity of students, who are planning their own artistic growth. Therefore, in most cases, optional courses are offered without being assigned or recommended for a particular semester. The standard length of study of the follow-up Master’s Degree Study Program is three years. Apart from the main Illustration studio, students will, during their studies, take further compulsory subjects: aesthetics and theory of art, selected chapters from the history of art; an integral part of the curriculum is a compulsory work placement and a compulsory field trip. In order to expand and diversify their qualifications, students are recommended, by the guarantor of the field, to choose, in addition to the main studio course, other subjects from the creative block, such as Drawing, Painting, Scientific Illustration, Intermedia, Graphics, etc. Students will complete the selection of subjects from their curriculum by choosing a subject from the optional block – e.g. classic photography, digital photography, art photography, history of contemporary photography, history of visual communication etc.

The best semester works, semester projects and Master works can be regularly exhibited in two UWB galleries in Pilsen under the LSFDA management, and also in the exhibition spaces outside the city of Pilsen. Students may complete the study and internships abroad; an obvious part of the study is the involvement of students, under the expert guidance of teachers, in many art projects and art events. Graduates are creative, flexible personalities who will have a thorough knowledge of art history, the history of the field, aesthetics and art theory. They will be qualified as Masters of an art school with a focus on fine arts, oriented towards Illustration Graphic Art. They are more experienced and artistically mature than Bachelors. They can find a job as independent artists: designers working in their field, illustrators of books for children and adults, encyclopedia illustrators, designers of teaching aids; they are able to work for new media and to work as draftsmen, painters, printmakers, graphic designers, etc. They can work in publishing houses, advertising agencies, DTP studios, printing works or as high school or university teachers, etc.
